Seven Sisters Perform ‘Maranga ake ai’ at Te Papa
The Seven Sisters perform Maranga ake ai at the 2010 Matariki Festival at Te Papa, to celebrate Māori New Year.
Banned from the radio by Radio New Zealand when it first came out because of its social activist message to young Māori to be proud of their cultural roots, Maranga ake ai was written and performed by the reggae band Aotearoa in 1984. The band provided a musical voice for the young Māori population of New Zealand at a time when te reo Māori was rarely heard on the radio.
The Seven Sisters include Lisa Tomlins, Ria Hall, Puawai Cairns, Bella Kalolo, Kali Kopae, Riria Hotere and Ramon Tewake.
