Frank Hofmann, Photographer

Czechoslovakian photographer Frank Hofmann was inspired by New Photography – a movement that sought ‘modern’ ways of seeing and viewed photography as art. He brought this vision to New Zealand from his German-occupied homeland.

Filmed in 2013 for the exhibition Ngā Toi | Arts Te Papa.

Why picked? I like this video because photography is quite a mysterious art form to me. How do you make art out of something that anyone else could have seen exactly as it was photographed? I think Athol gives some nice answers to this question in the way he talks about the difference between the way the camera sees and the way our eyes see.
